Are they intentionally making Ashley and Fred angry with Claire for 'what she's done' to highlight how some people react to mental illness.? If she had cancer they would be sympathetic and devastated not angry with her.

I think it is very clear that Fred and Ashley are devastated by this situation.Fred's reaction is that of a parent who's child is hurting.Ashley is one of the worst situations you can be in.Having a baby should be one of the happiest moments of your life,instead it turns into a nightmare.The only way you can help the woman you love is to take her to hospital,have her sectioned and hope that she gets better quickly.Meanwhile she hates you for it,and will probably never forgive even when she is well.There is nothing you can do to help her.She rejects you and stares right through you.What you are seeing is their frustration.
That was me 13 years ago,and the pain doesn't always go away for either of us.

they're not angry with her. they are worried and confused and, as others have said, frustated.
