Look at it from this perspective. If the first 21 players all picked their box "at random", then it follows that the remaining box was left "at random" and, hence, ends up with the 22 person "at random."

When the programme's contestant is picked, I always notice they don't look very surprised. Plus, their partner or friend is always ready in the audiance.

I have always presummed they are selected before the show is recorded and then allowed to pick their box first. I think they do the random name selecting thing just for show.

I think they pick balls with numbers from a bag like the FA cup draw thing!

All contestants had family or friends in the audience when the that days contestants is choosen then that persons family or friends are move to near the front

Yes, I read that they pick numbered balls first and that's their box number.
Apparently, they are told that they will be picked in the next "x" number of shows so they have a rough idea that it's their turn soon.

I have always wondered that too, especially as they sometimes say that their number is especially lucky for them, which suggests they didn't just pick out of a hat but chose it specifically.
