calling eastenders fans

After 10 yrs of watching no soaps I have got into eastenders and its pretty easy to catch up with everyone etc except that I cant work out the story behind Sonyia and martin and little girl and background of Jake and Ruby?

Sonya and Martin had a drunken one night stand a few years back which resulted in the little girl being born. Sonya put her up for adoption. Meanwhile, Sonya and Martin decide to get married. Sonya decides the adoption thing wasn't such a good idea after all and struggles to let go, making frequent visits to their daughter. The adopting parent fell ill and the adopted grandmother took on responsiblity, but decided she was too old so has passed her back to Sonya and Martin. By which time Martin and Sonya had split up due to Sonya's lesbian fling with thingymabob. They tried to play happy families so they would be able to keep the little girl and it ended up Martin and Pauline taking her on. I think that's about right.

well when Sonia and Martin were 16 they had sex and produced a little girl who they named Chloe. Sonia had her adopted as Martin and her were too young to look after her. Chloe's new parents named her Rebecca and they died in a car accident and her new mum's mum looked after her. She died of cancer a few months ago and hence the reason Pauline,Martin and Sonia are looking after her. I dont think she knows that Martin and Sonia are her real parents unless they have told her and I missed it.

As for Jake when Ruby's dad went into prison he told Jake to look after her which he is trying to do but not very successfully.

Ah yes, sorry. It was the grandmother that became ill, not the adoptive parents.

As for Jake and Ruby.... Ruby's dad was the local criminal for which Jake and his brother used to work for. Jake's brother got too involved and ended up going a little bit nuts, so Jake shot him. Johnny Allen decided to end his criminal ways and gave himself up to the police in order not to lose Ruby (she gave him an ultimatum). So Johnny asked Jake to look after her while he was doing time.

I dont watch EE anymore lynneylou. Its the same old scenario over and over with all soaps. I expect I could do as you did,not watch EE for ages yet still be able to pick up the storyline. Shame really as I used to love my soaps.

I have to say Ward Minter that is pretty impressive. I watch most episodes but if I tried to answer the question, I wouldn't be able to remember all those little details.

Some minor corrections:

Martin and Sonia were both 14 when they became pregnant, and 15 when Rebecca was born.
Sonia did not realise that she was pregnant until she went into labour.
The adoptive grandmother died after a fall, not from cancer.
