Bolger was originally intended to play the Tin Man, with Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett in The Beverley Hill-Billies) as the Scarecrow, but managed to get MGM to switch the parts.

Ebsen then had a near-fatal reaction to the aluminium powder used in the Tin Man make-up, and had to be replaced by Jack Haley.
