The Ring ( US version )
5 Answers
SPOILER!!!!! Anybody else think it was actually quite good? Having watched it for the first time last night, I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do know that there is a Japanese original which is reportedly more atmospheric and eerie, but the bit where Samara climbs out of the TV almost required me to change my underwear!! One question remains unanswered though - why does making a copy save your life?

Making a copy saves you because it passes the curse on. A similar concept was used in the M.R. James short story "Casting the Runes", which was filmed as "Night of (Curse of) the Demon" with Dana Andrews (there was also a UK TV version a long time ago).
its because you are continuing the ring, the cycle. incidentally i havent seen the american version, but i wonder if anyone knows why its been called 'the' ring, when it should be just 'ring'. ive seen the posters with a circle on it,and wondered if americans had to have something identifiable, like a ring, because they wouldnt understand it meant ring as in a continuing cycle.

yeah i think thats what they want you to think, but americans have to have things spelled out for them. otherwise they wouldnt know why it was called ring. but the title 'ring' definitely doesnt refer to a shape or anything, but the continuation of the cycle, like i said before. and i finally saw it last night, and i was dissapointed like i knew i would be. it was rubbish. not a patch on the original.
SPOILER- I liked both, but found the US explained it a little better, for example there is little or no mention of Horses in the origional, but they do feature in the 'Video' alot, in the US version it explains in detail the whole story with regards to that. When I went to see the US version my wife refused to see it so I went in alone and there was nobody else in the cinema, one of the few times I've been a bit worried by a Horror film.
