Some poor films would have been good if they had been better made. Can you think of any movies that would make good remakes? I personally would nominate The Illustrated Man, originally based on the book by Ray Bradbury. A good story, but let down by a low budget and by the lack of special effects in a story that demanded them. With today's CGI effects, it could be done most convincingly. Rod Steiger played the Illustrated Man in the original. Today I think Rutger Hauer would be good in the title role.

There is a film that was made in the early 90's called "The Haunted" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102007/ which was based on a true story about the alleged haunting of the Smurl family. This is definately the scariest film that I have ever seen. If they made a remake of this now I bet someone would make a lot of money from it judging by the success of The Blair Witch.
Bonfire of the Vanities...read the book and hated the movie...someone should give it another try.
