Going pages and pages back.... Fern said that she had a gastric band for health reasons, her GP advised her to, not because she wanted to be skinny and also, it's hardly fair to criticise her just because she can afford to have surgery (assuming it wasn't done on NHS) and Joe Bloggs can't. If she had had the op done on the NHS then people would be up in arms that "Surely she can afford to go private" and would be a drain on our health service. The woman can't win!
Lastly, I am a glossy mag addict but I am definitely not skinny and am not interested in becoming so, I eat healthily and try to exercise when I can, but just because I read about Nicole Richie doesn'tm ean I want to be her.
Phew, feel better now.
B00, which donut did you have? I have the Devil's food cake one or a plain glazed one, or a chocolate covered custard filled one. I would have all three but you'd need a mortgage to get them

For years she went on and on about her weight not being an issue or concerning her. Obviously, she was in denial. (Why do the press keep saying she's a size 12 now? She's at least a 16)
I was flabbergasted last year, after her 6 weeks off, during the school holidays, she came back alot trimmer. I don't believe she had her band fitted 2 years ago, her weight loss was sudden, during last summer.
I do feel, though, if she felt she had to go to such drastic means, then that's her business. She shouldn't really have to explain herself to anyone.
Fern's This Morning colleague, Alison Hammond is going through a similar thing. She had a Gastric Bypass, but claimed her weight loss was natural, now her Woman magazine column is under threat, because she did not disclose this. Really, it's no one's business but their own.

She had the op in 2006 Velvetee. I found this on a medical site. It might explain why her weight loss was not noticed straight away (although she has been losing weight steadily for some time):
'However, dont give up too soon on your band if you are one of these people experience in Australia shows that it can take a full 2 years for people to get their heads around how to live effectively with their gastric band, and when they do, they start to lose weight.'
From experience I can say that initially people will not notice that you have lost weight and then suddenly you reach a point when everybody notices, (usually when you start wearing different styles of clothes)!
