Perhaps she should have come clean, but she is only human after all. And she did lose weight by diet and exercise. The gastric band was only an aid to this. To see some of the nasty comments on this thread alone, then I can quite understand why she is suffering from stress at present.

She is one of TV's biggest (not meant rudely) assets and I hope she returns fit and well.

What a bl00dy shame. What business is it of anyone's how she lost the weight? If I had one fitted I wouldn't be waltzing into work announcing it to all and sundray.

She didn't try to plug a weight loss book or DVD.

I think she's a lovely woman and she doesn't deserve the cr@p that the UK media enjoy bestowing on our 'celebrities'

I know this isn't answering your question gina, but I don't see why Fern has to justify herself to anyone - it's nobody else's business what she does to her body and going by the comments on this thread it's no wonder she'd want to keep it quiet.

Because, as stated in the Telegraph article:

A gastric band is more than an aid - anyone will lose weight if they physically cannot eat more than a small amount. She is in no position to advise anybody how to lose weight naturally - she couldn't do it.


Don't forget - she gets paid a lot of money for these magazine articles. She has taken money under false pretences.

i totally agree, it isnt anyones business but her own BUT when as others have said she raves about how the weight was lost by exercise and healthy eating, and it gives ordinary people an incentive to try and lose the weight then wonder why it isnt going as quick as hers did, then people find out that she did cheat a little then thats wrong, she is a role model for a lot of people and now she has come down to earth with more than a bang. if she wasnt bothered what people think about her having the op, why is she now off work due to the stress its all caused.?

Keeping it to yourself is one thing, but telling the fat nation a large porky pie, is another.

If you famously present your big body loving �image� as an icon of national TV, you should never really claim to have a private life that involves rapid weight reduction through diet and exercise, when it has been achieved by artificial means. You will always get found out.

A lot of said fat nation are disappointed as they had something to strive for, a role model who showed that it could be done (yes, a little self-centred and idolatry, but that�s audiences for you). Finding out that she effectively �cheated� and �lied� about being content and happy to be a larger woman has upset a large amount of large people.

Well, as I said, she perhaps should have come clean. But I know full well that I would be upset and stressed out if I read comments about myself referring to me as a lying, fat b1tch, lard arse, etc. etc.

She made a mistake.

Ethel, even GP's refer to a gastric band as an aid. It actually doesn't work for some people and they still need to eat properly and exercise.

She has followed a strict exercise regime is now eating properly and in my opinion, whether or not she had a gastric band fitted, she is helping others.

Completely agree with lakitu its her own business. TV is just ridiculous nowadays. Next presenters will be having to tell people what colour knickers they are wearing. Jeez I can you really see any viewers being so distraught and upset that she lied, no, so get over it
