newspaper spelling errors

Some years back an american newspaper (which had been circulating for several years) suddenly and for no apparent reason, started making spelling mistakes. There was no change in staff or duties. The errors were not caused by machinery,technical changes or methodology. Most matters remained the same.It was not done on purpose. Later on they apologized and gave the explanation for the mistakes. The whole thing was rather funny and crazy. What was it?

I've answered this one before - their spell-checker was set to UK English instead of American English...

I do not know the answer,otherwise why post the question? This is a serious question from a serious radio programme. I will know the correct answer when someone (hopefully myself) gives it to the radio. Your answer Aquariel is wrong. Technical equipment is not involved. Please try again. Thanks.

WHAT IS YOUR OBSESSION WITH THIS?

I once worked for a newspaper and at times I was asked to write/type copy. Casual staff came in at wkends and typed and sometimes even the sales teams typed for print. Many people in editoral, production, sales contribute to the typed word in press and some can't spell. When I did this job is was on ancient macs with only the program required, no spell check, no internet.
