It was John Hart. Hart was the Lone Ranger from 1952-53. Moore was fired over a pay dispute and eventually came back (on a higher salary) to play the Lone Ranger again.

Chad Michael Murray played the part on TV in 2003, Clayton Moore was unable to reprise the role due to his being dead ;-).

From what I remember of Clayton Moore's performance being dead wouldn't have been a handicap. I preferred The Cisco Kid.
