Mac is a surgeon and yet is constantly referred to as Dr MaCartney. I thought surgeons in the UK were called Mr. Or is it just a particular type of surgeon? Brill prog. by the way!

It is, isn't it! Think it takes a bit of getting used to though, as my flatmate doesn't like it at all and the humour is definitely an acquired taste! I think it's brilliant. On too late mind. And another incentive for watching it- I am in love with Boyce...ah, lovely Boyce. Lovely lovely Boyce.
I think the show is generally pretty good, but a bit hit and miss at times. The radiololgist (played by Mark Heap) is very good. And Caroline Todd (Tasmin Greig) is quite attractive - in a pointy kinda way. Sorry boognish76, this makes no attempt to answer to question, just thought I'd offer my opinion that's all.
as far as i know, doctors are called doctor and consultants are called mr - as mac is trying to avoid becoming a consultant, i guess he'll be doctor for a while!
No Consultants are only known as Mr. if they are consultant surgeons. Surgeons are Mr. other doctors are Doctor.
.....unless they are professors.
