emmerdale

I was watching emmerdale with my grandchild last night when dike dingle kissed jasmine. Why does
abnormal behaviour such as this have to be shown when normal families are watching tv together at 7:00pm. It was hard explaing to a seven year old why 2 female's were kissing. It's just another case of the media drip feeding everyone into believing that lesbian and homosexual behaviour is natural.

If not then perhaps you should, what you are suggesting is simply a (much) milder interpretation of the Nazi ethnic cleansing regime! Yes I know this has nothing to do with race, but Hitler too saw fit to do away with homosexuals. To not expose children to homosexuality surely suggests that when they do come accross it, they would presume it to be wrong?
What if your grandchild, upon reaching age 12 had homosexual feelings, yet without programmes such as these having explained the idea of homosexuality the child would be in utter turmoil! would you wish that on one of your own?
We should have learnt from the nazi regime that such immature, short-sighted beliefs breed atrocities such as the holocaust. Luckily, your grandchild is part of a generation who will (hopefully) grow up with much more of an open-mind, and we just have to hope that your ignorance to people who may be born slightly differently, although not 'normal' are still just as part of normal society as you are will not be accepted by your grandchild. After all, we don't want another generation of Hitlers, we want more Gandi's please!!
I myself am very much heterosexual but am glad that the majority of people with such strong views as to yours belong to one generation. Should one of your descendants turn out to be homosexual, I will be one of the people accepting them as much as any other person.

baremission.
My generation as you suggest did not accept homosexuality as readily as this generation does but that does not make me a Nazi, and in fact I had relations killed in both wars fighting evil regimes. I have always known and accepted that we live in a world were homosexuality is practiced and never suggested that any harm should come to people of a different gender. What I will not accept is that the type of sordid behaviour should hammered down our throat at every opportunity and I beleive that the media should promote more two parent male and female families and lets get back to "normal" family life.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that there is a lack of two parent male and female familes in the media. In fact if we are talking about emmerdale as an example we can acknowledge numerous happy & wholesome two-parent-heterosexual familes, such as Ashley and Laurel, and the Dingle parents to Belle. Then there is one homosexual couple. I'd say that's a representative ratio for one village. No, you wouldn't find a homosexual couple in every single village in Britain, but it does go some way to reflect the diversity of today's Britain.
Children understanding the diversity of today's Britain is just vital for them to understand the world around them in which they are growing up.
I can however appreciate that you grew up in a generation where homosexuality was not accepted, and far from the norm. But what is evident is that by the time your grandchild reaches your age, homosexuality in families is highly likely to be as acceptable and normal as heterosexuality.

I sadly agree baremission that in the future Homosexuality will become as acceptable as hetrosexuality to lots of people, but having said that it will be just as abhorrent to lots of others. I have no problem with a human being genuinely loving his/her fellow human. Yet I can never understand how Homosexuals can have a sexual relationship without it making me feel queasy. I notice in one of your previous replies you state how the Nazis jailed and did worse things to Homosexuals. This is sadly true and the Nazis were a plague on the earth. But did you know that until fairly recently any practicing Homosexuals in our armed forces were dishonourably discharged from the forces. So even though we werent' as radical as the Nazis Homosexuality was certainly frowned upon in the British Forces and considered unsavoury and unnatural.

We should also respect that people of the older generation will have different beliefs than those who are younger. Things have changed so much over a very short time span!
My mother who is in her 80's tries very hard to accept homosexuality but I know she really doesn't. It doesn't make her narrow minded or sad. She is just a product of her generation.
Fortunately, in years to come these old prejudices will die out, but we must respect those older people who just can't work it all out.

Thanks Lofty lottie for your response. But as far as not being able to work it all out, surely my views are as correct as any one elses. I personally think I have worked it out, and am glad I have had the experience of living in a previous generation. I fear for future generations as I look at the state of our nation.
Sorry, Frodsham, my last reply was a bit rude actually - I wasn't inferring that older people are incapable of working things out - I am a pensioner myself. I like to think I am open minded myself, but there are some things happening these days that I can never accept and don't think I ever will simply because of the way I was brought up - tatoos on women for example (in case BOO reads this!).
I too think that the best set up for families is a marriage between a man and a women, but can accept that there are alternatives which are not necessarily bad and come within the realms of 'normal'.
However, as you know from this thread, I sort of support your views about what the soaps show on television - not just from the point of view of gay sex, but also hetrosexual sex and violence.
I accept the fact that my mother at 89 years old is probably a lot older than you, and she will never understand how people can be gay. In her day (and also in my younger days) there were far more unmarried batchelors or spinsters and there sexuality was never questioned - they were just assumed to have never found a partner. These days fortunately a lot of these people would have found someone to share there lives with and it would have been accepted. (I am not saying that all unmarried people were or are gay!!)

I agree with you Frodsham, there are many things to be feared about the state of our nation with regard the wellbeing of our future generations.
Terrorism, Obesity, Cancer...
however I don't think acceptance of homosexuality poses a real life-threatening situation for many of out descendants? If you were referring to such atrocities and not homosexuality, I apologise.

I think Carol midgely sums things up nicely in one of her Times column articles:
When discussing the fact that the older generation get away with racism:
"The young are from a different generation, too, but we forgive them nothing. They only have to appear in public wearing a hooded fashion top and we call the police."
Obviously, this is on a completely different subject matter but its the same sort of theme.
