Wow! Was that gripping or what? Even though we all knew the fantastic outcome, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat.

Very well made. Anybody agree??

Well said hatlessjack. I agree wholeheartedly. I don't think the father was in 1st class, just sitting at the front. I think that 1st class on these commuter flights just take up the 1st couple of rows unlike a Jumbo or bigger, where it is a separate compartment.
And how come if they knew they were going down into the river not one passenger got a life jacket
Ok Ok he was sat at front then and his son at back.
I was thinking that re sitting together... last year's holiday I had to sit apart from my kids (then aged 9 and 14) and can't even being to imagine how I would have felt if anything had happend!
It might have been because they didn't hve enough time and I don't think the passengers knew they were landing in the river until the pilot announced 'brace for impact'
surely anytime when lifejackets are needed they wouldnt have much time for them. lol

Yes angel. They thought there was going to be another 9/11 and probably had no idea, why would they, that they were going to land on water.
hippy hoppy - I wouldn't have thought too much about sitting apart from family on a plane before but now I will always make sure all family are sat together. I have never been that keen on flying - I like the feeling - but theres always that thought that it could crash in my mind - so I am even more scared of getting on a plane again now.

You know the engines failed because of bird strikes well both engines failed so was there a bird strike on both engines then? How unlucky would that be? I'm a bit surprised bird strikes don't happen more often or perhaps they do but just not on the engine
yes there was and also at a height where you wouldnt normally get bird strikes
Echo the words of HatlessJack + Chrissa1- Was most impressed with the channel 4 documentary too + it was evident from the programme that the pilot was even more of a hero than first realised although in the first incident thought he was pretty remarkeable. After the programme thought he was a phenomenal hero. Just like to say to all the cynics- Octavius et all- if you watched the programme fully with your heart switched on as well as your brain fully engaged you would not make such foolish comments that display such a distinct lack of common sense as well as emotional intelligence. Yet, the Miracle on the Hudson River was a miracle + thank goodness this plane was flown by the pilot Sullenberger, too!

Will include this in my current 'happy' book am peicing together too. Warmest wishes to all, Bea
There is no statue erected to a cynic or a critic- statue are for the phenomenal individuals + heroes :-)
Maybe 4get but I think they had a lot less time on this occasion as they started going down just six minutes after take off so perhaps they weren't as high as they should have been and therefore less time. Having said that even if you were high up landing in river could still be absolute last minute decision

Yes angel. The co pilot was going through a 3 page check list to restart the engines, if this had happened at 35,000 feet. They were hit at 3,000. So time is definitely what they didn't have.
so basically as the programme says 'A Miracle'

Think the above link will interest you. Thank goodness none of the cynics or critcs or bah humbugs were flying that plane- as if they were everyone aboard would have been dead anyhow!! Thank goodness it was an extraordinary phenomenal individual in pilot Chesley Sullenberger 'Sully' who heroically flew everyone on that plane to safety. Not only did he fly all to safety yet with the help of his crew he ensured every passenger got out of the drowning plane alive. He cut the life raft free of the plane, too. Not only that yet he even took the jacket off his own back to keep one shivering passenger warm. Documentary by channel 4 was very well made indeed! Was feeling very ill last night yet was determined to watch it all + thrilled that did as it was one of the best/most inspirational programmes have ever watched. Warm wishes, Bea :-)

Well said Bea. I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Bless you chrissa1 for your kind words as well as starting this thread in the first place- you are a big star!
Just thought you might like to read these words by Lorrie Sullenberger- Sully's wife , too!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"People have said a lot of things about my husband. I knew when I married Sully that he was the most honorable man I knew," she said. "I have always known him to be an exemplary pilot. I knew what the outcome would be that day because I know my husband. But mostly for me, he's the man that makes my cup of tea every morning."

Time for a cup of tea for Bea, too ;-)
if you watched the programme fully with your heart switched on as well as your brain fully engaged you would not make such foolish comments that display such a distinct lack of common sense as well as emotional intelligence.

Thats a bit below the belt isnt it Beatrice?

I avoided the programme because of my constant disappointment at shoddy thrown together docudramas lacking in content and clarity, that are continuously aired on C4 & Five. I am delighted that others felt it was different from the usual, and therefore perhaps wish I had seen it.

And I admitted to being cynical about it (the documentary, not the crash/pilots skill), so no need to keep weeing up against that tree is there now.

you crack me up oct :-) weeing up against a tree. lol
Octavius- the more you open your mouth the more you make a complete fool of yourself before everyone, so keep going if you want to make others chuckle. Was not below the belt at all- just telling telling the truth. Only tears in my eyes were last night- tears of joy and wonderfment regarding the heroism of pilot Sully + how the miracle had changed everyone's life for the better- people realising how precious life is. Oh my gosh, to think you think would cry over such foolish words as yours Octavius you really are barking up the wrong tree big time, too! Warmest wishes to eveyone here with emotional intelligence as well as common sense, Bea :-)
Men are four: He who knows not and knows not he knows not, he is a fool--shun him; He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is simple--teach him; He who knows and knows not he knows, he is asleep--wake him; He who knows and knows he knows, he is wise--follow him! Lady Burton
