Did you watch Big Fat Gypsy Wedding last night on C4? Was this a true reflection of the Traveller Lifestyle? They seemed to have strong moral values and principles and there was a real sense of community. And they all seemed to have plenty of money! Or was the programme painting far too rosy a picture?

I watched it factor30 and to be honest I don't see how they can call / class themselves as 'travellers' when the stay in what is essentially a trailor park or even in houses. How does that make them 'travellers', the clue is in the name from the verb to 'travel'.

As for the money well those god awful dresses wouldn't come cheap, even if they were hideously tasteless.

and where do they get the cash from for all these weddings, surely that much money would mean a hefty tax and NI payment.

The moral values are extremely lacking in our local "traveller" site, they do steal anything not fixed down around here, yet all have brand new 4x4s.

perhaps we attract the minority in Norfolk. Out of all the ones ive encountered i would say about 20% of them are decent people.

I didnt watch all of it but did admire their fierce protection of their lifestyle and family values.

Most peoples problems with travellers are the mess, disruption and damage caused to property. This is because local authorities would sooner the problem went away rather than having an infrastructure in place to support their lifestyle.

Each district could set aside a small plot of land for short term encampments. Rent would be up front - no payment then they could be switfly evicted with no red tape, much like we would if we didnt pay rent/mortgage. The areas would have skips for refuse (as we have bin collections). Properly managed I'm sure the travellers would co-operarate as its in their best interest.

Round our way there are loads of families who have lived here all their lifes but profess to be 'travellers' despite having never been anywhere. These are ones with the badly kept horses, living off benefits and chips on their shoulders. A day on the road would kill them!

many on the site here (a council run site with electricity, toilets, utility buildings etc) have been there years. The town was told when the site was built that if it was full then any travellers pitching up elsewhere in the town would be moved on. That rarely happens. Weve had them all over the industrial estate where i work, watched them taking stuff from the site. had to clear up after there kids who pooed on our car park.

the whole thing last night about how they dont let their kids mix with general public doesnt happen here. The kids roam free, to the point that a child of about 18 months wandered off and was found alone at other end of estate.

as i said, perhaps its just the ones here. I have known a family who turned up at our old company site, the woman froze all night waiting for someone to come into work so she could ask for a pallet to set her fire. The family stayed there for almost a year and were pretty much security for us, warning whenever a group of travellers were heading through. They didnt want to be involved with any of the others due to trouble.

but non travellers steal round here too. There are good and bad, but as for morals doesnt stop the blokes sh*ging about. Didnt change my view on them at all, they may not all steal from people but they all steal from the government. Thats why they wont discuss money, because of the tax man

I've met a good few over the years and in my opinion it was pretty accurate. They did miss out the fact that there's a good chance they would wreck the venue by the end of the night.

What a load of H0rsesh1te try living round here. Theiving scum who opt out of society seem above the law, drive around in flash motors no doubt untaxed uninsured. Boowldog, what naivety, they have had proper sites all over the country, they move in and steel what they can, trash the loo block and flog the copper pipes. They even gave them council houses round here, they gutted them and pi55ed off. These people have no redeeming features. They'll wreck wherever they go leave a ton of sh1te and nick what ain't nailed down. Kin pikies are no better than kin tape worms, parasitical scum. They may stick to their weding vows but that's about it, Maybe C4 bigwigs have a pikey uncle or something. Give the councils powers to move them off straight away and impound and flog their Porches etc to pay for the damage. Our local sports club got infested last year and it ended up costing 7K to put right the damage right and week to get shot of them.

But last night's programme never referred to that side of things- it looked a very cosy, loving community with strong morals about sex, drugs, drink.

Just to confirm that, living in the same area as Redcrx, I can confirm what she says. They systematically rob the outbuildings of the houses where I live. Sorry, I have no time for the majority of them, but some may well be OK. They usually have loads of money. Had to laugh when one of them said that they don't talk about money because of their culture - more likely that it's because of their ill-gotten gains.

And drugs are rife, and they kill their dogs and leave them in binbags. And when they leave the area, they leave their mess behind them. Apparently their dwellings are spotless.

Come to Walsingham when there is a religious gathering and you will notice that most of the shops are locked and boarded. The travelling community always come down to the major gatherings and the residents live in fear.

As for strong morals, that is just complete nonsense.
