Is it true the actor in this ad died or is it just an urban legend? Have tried searching already but just get links to chat rooms wondering the same thing.

Can't find confirmation on t'internet but I did read an interview with his (sorry, can't remember the name) parents about how they enjoy being able to see their son in the adverts even though he succumbed to a brain tumour 8(?) or so months ago.

From what I remember he was producer for the ads and never intended to be infront of the camera but no suitable actor was cast, so he stood in.

elephant.co.uk have said they will continue to run the ads with the parents blessing

Apparently it was Stephen Vickerstaff:

kempie is right my partner also read the same story about his parents would like the adverts to continue to run in his memory.

Yes, His name is Stephen Vickerstaff, He died approx 6 months ago now. He had been ill for about 4 days and after attending the MTV awards, he fell into a Diabetic Coma caused by DKA ( Diabetic Ketonic Acidosis ) and this resulted in his death. He was only 28. He was working for MTV in production.

I met Steve on a few occasions and am in quite regular contact with his Dad. He is sadly missed by his family !
