My memories of the book are overshadowed by the pretty awful black and white film -

not one of George sanders best -
Helly....Sorry that this innocent and very helpful thread
has gone astray ! But thanks for your reminder.

Trying to get the thread back on track.....everybody should look out for the BBC radio adaption of "The Chrysalids" Its not available via the iplayer at the moment, but the Beeb may bring it back at some point in the future.

Thanks for that Mikey. I loved that book too. In fact all of his books are fa ourites of mine.
There are some very strange people about, aren't there. Don't think I've ever put a nasty comment on anyone's thread. It just wouldn't occur to me.
I might give the second episode a go, we'll see.

I always liked Wyndham's work - the books and the (original) radio adaptations were great.

The triffids in particular worked so much better when one was imagining them - the TV and film versions just weren't scary enough.

I'll give this new version a listen when I have a quiet couple of hours next week.

Thanks Helly

You're very welcome sunny-dave
Triffids on the radio was terrifying... even the old doctor who on radio with the Daleks still has a wee bite !!
Helly.....are you an avid radio listener....I've always loved radio....
When we moved to Canada the radio was dire so MrG climbed a very tall tree to fix an aerial so I could have The World Service.....he was never the same.... :-)
"Triffids" was a set book at my School, in about 1965
( I think !)

The book the following year was "The Searchers"

That is the way to get kids to read, especially boys !
No one has mentioned Trouble with Lichen yet

I have often thought about a fungus slowing down metabolism and therefore prolonging life and wondered if it were a goer
Books and Radio have better pictures - my mind can make things far more scary and unsettling than any film or TV.

I didn't sleep properly for weeks after reading Bram Stoker's Dracula - let alone with the windows open - whereas the films just don't have the same effect.
Yes, Peter - a rather cerebral book and therefore less often adapted - but an interesting concept.
Does anyone realise that a chap called Simon Clark wrote a sequel to "Triffids" called " The Night of the Triffids"

We 'did' John Wyndham at school. I think I have read all his books, even those I didn't 'have to'. :-)

How wonderful to be introduced to JW at school. You're younger than me - we did Northanger Abbey for O level, but never read any modern books at all.
Yes gness. I have Radio 4 on all the time if I'm in with the exception of 10.30am when I listen to Popmaster. I have sometimes managed to get one right!
I think I've got Trouble with Lichen, but can't remember anything about it. That too will go on the 'books to read' pile.
It's 4 and 4extra for me all the time, Helly except in the morning when my lover who doesn't know he is my lover is on Radio Northampton....he is fantastic.....witty, clever and a brilliant interviewer...and not a bad kisser either....x
Sigh....
Just a little sigh needed, Shoota...he's gay and in love with Gok.... :-(
What a nice thread this has been. Its very rewarding to know that there are several other Radio fans on here !

Radio was always my first love, from Jimmy Clitheroe in the late 50's, to Mrs Dales Diary, which I used to listen to my Mum.

I can remember switching the radio on, at least 10 mins before the programs started, in order for the valves to "warm up"

"Julian and Sandy" would have me squirming on the carpet in the lounge, practically weeing myself with laughter, even though I didn't really understand it !

I feel a little sorry for the youngsters today, for whom radio only means pop music, although I can vividly recall listening to Tony Blackburn, on that fateful day in 1967.

Lets make a New Years Resolution, that the Radio part of AB is just as popular as any other section !
