I am really enjoying the re-runs of Butterflies.

It has lost none of its bittersweetness, with Ria longing to be 'daring' but too faithful to take that step.

Wasn't Nick Lyndhurst THIN!!!

And I find myself realising how gorgeous Wendy Craig was at that time, with those beautiful eyes and her porcelain skin, I could fall for her any time! And when she teases Ben with her come-on lines she looks really sexy and provocative - I think her voice is really seductive.

Why can't they write comedy as good as that now? Apart from the absence of mobiles and double-yellow lines, and the furniture and clothes, it could be a contemporary comedy - those themes of unrequited love never go out of style.

I used to love Butterflies. I wanted to call my daughter Ria, but hubby wouldn't hear of it!
Agree ..lost none of its whimsy...I liked it when they had to move all the cars from drive..
I'm watching it too. Wonderful stuff. Talking to trees, shouting at God, hating cooking .... I can really relate to her. :o)

As for why they don't write comedy as good as that now, perhaps society's sense of humour has changed. It seems to me to have lost much of its genuine and gentle ingenuity in favour of the rather more coarse and caustic – but I know which I prefer.
Agree naomi. Loved that programme.
Must catch up with it, didn't realise it was being shown again.
I remember a scene where Ria poured her heart out to the cleaner. at the end of it the cleaner said "I can smell cat's p*ss!"
Agree with everybody. We didn't have a video recorder when the series was on first and I missed the episode when Ria had her opportunity to have a fling with Leonard. I only managed to watch that on youtube about 5 years ago !

Always remember the cooking disasters that poor Ria used to bring to the table, to the great trepidation of her husband and the boys.
No one has mentioned how good Geoffrey Palmer was as Ben.

Are we talking of the same programme Jordy?
Yes, I'm enjoying the re-runs too...love the cooking disasters, I remember one episode when the food wouldn't come out of the pan "It's gathering speed"...lol
I found it annoying as well. I am probably a stick in the mud but i never find unfaithfulness funny which is why i never liked goodnight sweetheart either.
I had forgot just how good this was, till I saw it on tv again, it's brill

Ria never was unfaithful to Ben....
she played around with the idea, she kept meeting the bloke.
I often think about robbing a bank.....doesn't make me a thief !
Unless you show bedclothes going up & down & people talking with every other word beginning with F, you do not have a very good program to show. I can remember really smashing films coming out of Hollywood without resorting to the above & now difficult to choose a movie with a good storyline without f-ing & blinding.

WR.
well but if you took the thinking to the stage of wandering in and out of banks, planning how you would do it and seriously considering it then I for one wouldn't trust you!
We can't control out thoughts, its true, but we can control our actions!!
Wasn't Nick Lyndhurst THIN!!!
Weren't we all!
Does Geoffrey Palmer ever play a different type of role, the grumpy forebear of Victor Meldrew? Even in a Bond film he was a grump!
As Ria said, Ben had a face like a crumpled leaf. Perfect for a grump. :o)
