Bill Wyman refused to return to this country from France for two months of 1986 to avoid facing charges. His eventual return coincided with the decision that he would not be prosecuted for his relationship with a minor.

Mandy Smith was 13 years and 7 months old when she met Bill Wyman and within 2 weeks had started a relationship with him, with the full blessing of her mother.

I have never once called Bill Wyman a paedophile but his actions are enough to place him on the Sexual Offenders Register.

kempie, I am not au fait with the sex offenders register..I know it was introduced in 1997 ~ I just wondered, have people who offended befoe this date been put on the register?

I remember the furore at the time..both the relationship details comig out in the press and the wedding 6 years later. I have to admit looking at Mandy Smith at 13 years old you would have thought she was much older.

Like a lot of those so called 'Wild Childs' of the era she was visiting nightclubs at a very young age...you have to wonder what on earth their parents were thinking.

The fact is Mandy Smith was by law under age. No matter how she acted/looked she was still a minor and he knew that. 'She told me she was 16' should not be a defence

By commenting on her appearance and streetwise personality I was pointing out the difference between sex with a minor and paedophilia. There is a difference, and as we are comparing Bill Wyman to Gary Glitter this needs pointing out.

I also was not trying to say I was condoning Wymans actions ~ just that there is a difference between being attracted to children rather than being attracted to a 13 year old who looks 18.

Placement on the Sex Offenders Register is not retrospective. My point was hypothetical - Wyman was never charged for his offences.

To be fair nobody explicity brought up the issue of paedophilia until after my post with the link. Up 'til that point I had never considered it as part of the comparison between the two men who broke laws in regard of sexual conduct.

I'm also quite disturbed by the double standard which is evident within this thread and prevalent in society as a whole. Ignoring the two specific cases above, it seems that a paedophile may never do more than look at pictures but is instantly labelled as the worst type of sexual predator and yet a girl as much as 4 years away from legally consenting to sexual intercourse may be fair game to a man of any age as long as she looks the part.

The irony of the Smith/Wyman affair is that he dumped her on her 16th birthday.

I can't see a double standard within the thread, only posts confirming the legal differences between sex with a minor and paedophilia.

And we still have to remember that Wyman has not been convicted of sex with a minor, a lot of which has to do with the fact that it was never proved that he had actually had sex with Mandy before her 16th birthday..they had simply *dated*. Rightly or wrongly, that is all we have to go on.

Yes Kempie because as we all know 'if they are old enough to bleed' etc. I find it disturbing that any middle age man would wish to have a relationship with any 14+ year old girl and I do not care how 'mature' she seems. It would seem that some of these children - and yes I think they are children - are looking for a father figure and any man should know better. It also opens a debate about a middle age man having an affair with a 16 year old BOY.

Two weeks after Wyman dumped Smith on her 16th birthday the affair became headline news (coincidence?) leading to Wyman's two month self imposed exile in France to avoid possible charges (the actions of an innocent man?). There was never any prosecution presumably because the case would have been far easier to try if Smith was still a minor (what evidence would still exist?)

They met up again 2� years later in March '89. Three weeks on they decided to marry and did so after a further two months.

BTW there are 2 posts which offer tacit approval to the underage relationship.
