I have seen the new series being advertised and fancy watching it but i haven't watched any of the previous serieses.
Would I need to watch them to understand the new series or could i just start watching this one? (IE did you need to have seen 1 and 2 to understand 3?)

Nope - each episode is a stand-alone, and there's usually a pretty good intro explaining who they basically are. It's top class entertainment too.
Just want to echo what Whickerman said - each episode stands alone so you don't need to have seen any others. Also Adrian Lester (who played Mickey in the previous two series) is not in this series (or not regularly anyway) and I think a new character is being introduced so it will kind if be a new start all round.

And Marc Warren is pretrty easy on the eye. At least I think so!
Good wholesome entertainment, no need to know much back-story. Most episodes are remakes of The Sting in one way or another anyway.
