Can anyone tell me why Frank the police officer in the last series is now in uniform instead of plain clothes.? Did I miss something crucial that would have explained this or is it just the directors making some changes?

After passing the Sergeant's Exam in the beginning of season 6, Tripp was required to spend some time in uniform on a patrol rotation, but soon returned to the homicide unit and plainclothes duty.
