What car to buy next?

I would like a 1.4 engine, medium size hatchback, up to say 4 years old, RELIABLE, not too worried about appearances or handling but am not keen on Fiats. i can go up to about £8k budget. What should i buy?

So far i am considering Toyota Auris, VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsas. Any thoughts?

Currently, the ŠKODA Fabia Hatch SE 1.2 is reduced in price by 25%.
A £12,000 car for only £9,000. Seems like a bargain to me, and everyone knows they are Volkswagen/Audi group these days.
I've always had vauxhalls, as need economical and reliable. Enjoy driving them too.

Thanks all. Interesting that no-one has asked me what i currently drive?

I'll have a look at the Honda Jazz but might well end up with a newer version of my current car! It comes high in this really useful random straw poll but i had wondered if I could better it!
What is your current car ? belatedly

First, tell me what you think I should buy Tony.
Well out of those on your op, the Polo or the Auris, however there are some other very good cars that would suit your budget and engine size ( by the way, you don't say whether you would like petrol or diesel ), most have already been suggested, Skoda, Seat etc.
So you want a German car?

The VW Polo is built in Spain.
...on Friday afternoon.
Honest John recommends the Honda Jazz and that's good enough for me. It has so much space inside and you can fold the back seats right down and it becomes like a van. Handy when going to Costco:-)

They are a very good and reliable car, ladybirder.
Diahatsu Sirion, or Per Odua Mivi.
Brilliant.
I have a 1.4 Corsa. Bought new in 08. Never any problems. Regular service. For reliability the best car I've ever owned. Not as pretty as I'd like but you can't have every thing. I had a head turning Rover MG 05 plate. All it did was let me down, spent more time in the garage than on the road.
Yep tony it is. Reliability is the most important thing to me. Too many memories from many moons ago of having to always park on a hill so I could get the car going the next day. Oh happy days.
VW are solid cars we had a Beetle for ages very reliable. Toyota engines are good too.
Should have mentioned we have a Honda Jazz now reliable and Ok fuel wise.

Awww Honda Jazz is pushing ahead in this poll, i will look out for them in my search and on the road this morning!

My current car is a VW Polo diesel.

Its been great but has cost me a fair bit at MOT time this and last year. As that time comes round again and the clock goes sailing past 120k miles, i need to update it. Petrol for me next.
My wife has a 5 year old 1.4 Honda Jazz Automatic. I love driving it and it's been no trouble at all in those years.
Dacia Sandero. Buy new and get 3 years warranty , and more space than in anything else at the price.
