My wife has got a used car from a private individual.
Ownership was transferred online and we have no physical paperwork.
As far as I can tell there is no way I can tax it until I get the V5.
She already has access to the vehicle but does not need to drive it until next Wednesday.
Is she allowed to drive it?

Do it online
If you’ve just bought the vehicle you can supply the 12-digit reference number on your new keeper supplement (V5C/2).
You can still Tax it online 'if'...

the 12 digit reference number from the new keeper slip if you’ve just bought the car (and do not have a V5C in your name yet)

Is that on the online transaction?

If you have no tax your insurance would not be valid so no driving.
When you transferred it online you still should have got the V5C/2 new keeper supplement (green slip) in some format which has a long reference number on it, using that and the registration number you can still tax it online as new keeper. Legally she can't drive it until taxed and the V5 may take a week to arrive.
Apologies catsrcool, I would like to ask a question regarding the registration document for anyone to answer, if I may: As I have not seen the most recent version, do these still have a statement on them to the effect that "....if you sell the vehicle..." you must promptly inform the DVLA or else risk a large fine ?

As stated the car was transferred on line and I have no access to the documentation.
My wife is a care worker will need to drive it from Wednesday taxed or not.
The original owner just supplied the information for me to transfer ownership online.
There is nothing dodgy about the transaction the original owner is a relative.
My question is can she drive it before we get the V5C
Can you contact the relative to supply the 12 digit reference number from the new keeper slip?
Can’t the relative message you with the 12 digit reference number?
Why no V5? Does your wife have any evidence that seller actually owned the car?
Think you can check with DVLA who current registered owner is.
I think your question has been answered - can't legally drive it until you've taxed it.

The seller is a relative and there is no doubt that they were the owner.
They are self-isolating. And can barely use a mobile phone let alone send text messages.
The relative is also more than 125 miles away.
If ownership was done online somebody would have received at least an email notification/confirmation. When I did this a couple of months ago I got an email from:
DO-NOT-REPLY
Sorry that should read
DO-NOT-REPLY [email protected]
Question Author
I have got the change of ownership emails.
Good because on there is a link to tax it
OK cats will not be a problem then, just have to apply for a new V5.
Question Author
Yes there is a link to tax it but it you still need the V5C
Does the Gov.UK link not help?

Tells you what to do and how to apply for a V5C as well.
No reference numbers on the change os ownership emails?
