wiper motor is playing up,need a new one,go to breakers or ebay
The intermittent wipers utilise a timed relay - most likely it is faulty - should be located in the fusebox somewhere.

Thanks very much - I want to try the relay option first. But cannot find anywhere a list or diagram of which relay controls what, but specifically which is the windscreen wiper relay, can anyone help?
Get a Haynes manual or look in the cars handbook or ask a friendly Ford technician/mechanic.
woodchopper is right . if normal & fast are working motor o.k. & you prob have faulty timer relay.

Thanks for the help - I have a Haynes manual, but it is not very helpful when it comes to the location of the relays - the user manual is about as helpful so I guess I am going to have to find someone who knows. Thanks to everyone anyway

Problem resolved the relay had become loose, a firm push and everything was working fine - for anyone who may come across the same problem.

Remove the internal fuse board - 2 retaining screws and push in the lugs on either side of the fuse board. I found this easier by supporting it from underneath from the footwell. (This fuse board os on the RH side of steering wheel which was hidden behind a small coin tray thingy.)

The windscreen wiper relay is on the second row (furthest from you) and in my case was coloured red.

On a final note 'What has happened to Hayes Manuals??? This is my sons Fiesta and he knows nothing about cars, so I told him "all you need is a Haynes Manual". In the 80's (yes I am old) I was forever fixing or tinkering with something on my cars and the only way I managed this was with my trusty Haynes Manual - so when I looked at the one my son had bought I was shocked at how they had gone downhill - crappy paper, poor photography and pretty lame instructions. Yet they now have a silly price tag and don't seem worth the money!
