I have been told that the top mount on my front suspension needs replacing. Please would you briefly describe what is involved, and could I do the job myself. If so, do I need any special tools?

hi there. ok firstly have you been told to change the mount
by family/friend or a trained mechanic.
what is the fault you have with your car?
IF you are hearing a knocking noise it could also be the shock absorber, possibly the wheel bearing( although that would usually make a rumbling noise before it starts to knock).
it could also be the cv joint ( they make more noise when steering is on full lock)
if you are confident, the job should take about an hour .
but you need a pair of spring compressors, about 30 quid
and a decent metal bar , about 3 feet long (for leverage)
if you still want to give it a go post a reply and i will advise step by step.
you dont need spring compressors as the spring doesnt need to come off the strut .the mount just sits on top of the strut and the strut is then re-affixed back onto the inner wing.
