rover 75 diesel starting

MY DIESEL ROVER 75 WILL NOT START -JUST CLICKING SOUND AND HEADLIGHTS FLASH WHEN YOU TURN KEY -- IF YOU TOW START IT RUNS FINE. Have tried new starter motor but same fault- Battry testing fully charged and earth returns check ok.
Any ideas please.

I have been looking through my manual......are you using the correct key?

Hi Tom,
Thank you for the key info; we have two that appear
identical and it was & is the same with each. However I have today had all the wiring / earths and relays checked
and terminals cleaned. we have now been able to start it
20 times without any glitch- so fingers crossed it will be
ok again tomorrow.
