Over reving ????

There is something wrong with my VOLVO 1.8.

Confused isnt the word when it comes to cars, engines and all that goes! The only way I can explain it is: it seem to be over revving, as if its accelerating without my effort.
Obviously I'm going to take it to the garage as soon as possible but wondered if anyone had any clue as to what is wrong :-(

Maybe an inlet pipe air leak (between mass air flow unit and inlet manifold) Nothing serious to fix.
