Most insurers allow you to adjust the excess as well. For example my policy included compulsory excess so I changed my voluntary excess to nothing. For some reason, this resulted in my quote being lowered. That's the great thing about comparision sites, you can fiddle about with what you want to see what's on offer.
No, I don't feel I'm being ripped off.
I have a modest car, I drive sensibly (thus so far avoiding any accidents) and I know that should I ever be unfortunate to be involved in an accident that renders my car uselss, I've effectively already paid for it to be repaired/replaced.
What would you suggest is a reasonable price to pay?

The Baked Bean analogy is sound.
One insurance company may quote you £300, another £600 and another £1,000.
So what?
If faced with the above, we'd all go with the cheapest one.
Different insurers have different underwriting criteria which produces different quotations for the same risk.
I don't see the point you are trying to make.

Car, home contents and building insurance are the only policies I consider necessary. They are the ones you really appreciate having when it all goes Pete Tong. But with everything in life it pays to shop around....and to read the small print.
I did smile when I had bought a relatively cheap pair of gold earrings and the salesman asked me if I wanted insurance, the policy was about 2/3 of the purchase price!

The way you drive Evian is one way, the CC of the car, to change your Insurance with the same comp & their charges, I do use comparison site as we all do, ( I think) I was Quoted when I was with the the Bulldog group!! to M.S. 150 Less by M.S. so who is taking the Izz here? do you not think you should pay on your experience & no accidents? I think we should.
