lights on dash board

I recently purshaed a peogeot 206 2ltr diesel (dec 2003 Model) and took out the extra extended warrenty on it and last night the light to the millage metre went. (all other dial lights are fine)

I phoned peugeot and they advised that bulbs are not covered by the warrenty but they told me to take the car in to investigate...

now, me being a woman, and from past things garages have tried to con me into I have no faith in any garage and dont want to be ripped off

can any one help me establish if it is a bulb behind the little screen or if its crystals or is there any easy way (if it is a bulb) I can access it and change it myself or if there is anything else in my car i can check .i.e a fuse.

Any help appreciated.

I don't know about this car but generally these little lights are part of the speedometer or even part of a larger electronic unit and replacing the bulb entails the most god-awful amount of disassembly and reassembly to get to 2p worth of bulb.

You'll probably find most garages will give you a horrendous quote to do this work and I doubt it'll be coverred by the warrenty.

Go to the garage and insist that this light should not fail this early on regardless of it being covered in the warrantee.  Explain to them that you would have understood you would have paid the cost of replacing a headlight bulb but this is different.  Be nice but be firm and explain that if it turns out to be a complete failre of the odometre then it's covered in the warrantee.

It's in their interest to help you out and they should investigate it free of charge under the terms of the warrantee.

I've had a garage charge me �200 for parts recently and I refused to pay it as they hadn't sorted the problems out after I first got it.

Your previous posters are right.  But if you've been sold a 'drive train warranty' then I'm afraid it will cover lights under no circumstances and probably not your odometer at all.

Is it liquid crystal.  Can you see the display in daylight, if you can't perhaps it is this and not the light which has failed?

If it's Peugeot's own, extended, original warranty then you will probably be able to persuade them to change it.

Thank you for all your help !

I went over a speed bump last night (slowly) and the light came back :o) so I think I may just have a dodgy connection somewhere. Will try my best to get peugeot to fix it for me as it should be covered by the warrenty (will obviously check first before I go to their garage).

Hopefully it stays on in the mean time !

I had a 206 and one of the lights near the speedo went out too. My boyfriend fixed it (he's not a mechanic, just used a screw driver and logic to get to it). It was a little bit fiddly but still only took 30 mins or so to replace it. Once you get to it, the bulb just 'pushes in and twists' that's the easiest bit! Maybe yours has just come unscrewed a little bit which is why is comes on and off.

ps, my boyfriend wants to add that once you've removed the screws from the dial binnacle you have to pull the whole display section forward to release it - it took him 20mins to work this out! It just clips in and out.
