22 Answers
When i was driving down the rd, i noticed that my steering wheel started to come loose, i first thought that it may have supposed to do that, but the realised that some of the bolts were missing, i couldnt stop to have a proper look, at the situation as i was on a busy motorway doing speeds of in excess of 40 mph, i was going to pull up on the hard shoulder but there wasnt one , so now i have found myself stopping in the fast lane, as this is the safestr lane t sop in out of the 3, when i was stationary i had a cigarette while i assessed the situation, i even took the wheel right off,NOW I CANT SEEM TO GET IT BACK ON AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TOWED AWAY WHAT CAN I DO

You may mock but I had a similar experience in that I had a few nights previously driven a long journey at 69.99999 mph down the motorways. Then I took the car to the shops and on the way back home the steering just stopped controlling the wheels ! I could spin it to no effect. Luckily I was going very slowly through a part where the road had parked cars and it was difficult to get past. Had to roll back to as near to the kerb as I could and await recovery. Had the full fault developed that other night I'd probably not be here to tell the tale.
Me too OG, I was going round a sharp bend when my bolts sheered off. I was grateful for that because it meant I was going slow enough to avoid disaster.
Anyway, I'd recommend paying the tow guy some money. He might give your car back then. By the way, smoking is bad for your health. Wondering around the fast lane is ok though, keep it up.

Many moons ago I was driving a Ford Zodiac very late one night with a young lady I shouldn't have been with and possibly one cider too many, I was rounding a long sweeping corner when the steering wheel came off in my hands and I crashed into a wall, no one injured but circumstances dictated I had to high tail from the area promptly and leave the car embedded in the wall, I was arrested the next day and spent a week locked up. those were not my best days, isnt it a good job we grow up.
