I have a 1997 MG MGF and I think the head gasket may have gone. I have steam coming from the water tank, which I am having to top up every 10 minutes. I know very little about car's, and was told this was a comon problem with MGF's. Is this true? Also, how much will the cost to put right?

Sounds an awful lot like it to me!

See here under common faults:

These guys are quoting 450

Sorry

450 sounds about right for that sort of job, especially the awkwardness of accessing the engine.

The MGF used to use the 1.8 K16 engine, I assume it still does.

while the k series engine exists, kebabmeister will never be allowed to rest his keyboard. sorry geraint, classic syptoms and they're known for it...

I actually liked the K-Series!  As long as it was looked after and you checked the levels regularly (people simply don't do this!) then it'll give you a lot of service.

I used to have an early 1.4 K-Series (20:1 lean burn) and I used to get 45mpg at 90mph, cough, er, 70mph ;)

So v64paul, when you're coming to the Oktoberfest? ;)

meet ya in the chat bank to plan it kebabmeister? i have contacts in the trade ...
