Is there such a thing as a car that I can use to go to the supermarket but also have weekends away in a kind of camper van that I can sleep in?? Very basic is fine.

VW camper van. Thousands of second hand ones available.
People get all sorts of vehicles converted but there aren't (to the best of my knowledge) any really small campervans that are actually manufactured as such.

Here's an example of a car conversion:

Bedford Bambi! They are very tiny (and a little bit old, so you might need to tinker with it a bit) but full of character.
A friend of mine had an old escort van that he slept in. One side was a cooker, cool box, storage and the floor was foam and the walls were insulated and covered in plywood and carpeted. From the ceiling he had various holders for various things. When he went travelling he add a roof top box. There was also an awning across the rear doors. Very basic but functional for two people. You would be able to do the same with a van of the same size.
A much more useful option is a micro-caravan. Park up for the weekend and you still have your car to travel about in. Small enough to be towed by virtually anything. Lots of choice but to give you an idea: http://www.danburymotorcaravans.com/models/modeltype.aspx?modelID=25&modeltypeID=20

Thanks to all.
(Caravan idea not practical as have no space to park it.)
A campervan based on a short wheelbase VW van would probably be your first choice. As also mentioned above, the Citroen Berlingo/Renault Kango/Fiat Doblo also makes for a good base vehicle.
