Cheapest Car To Insure For A 17 Year Old Lad? Suggestions Please.
16 Answers
When I was learning I got a Vauxhall Viva for £50 and it cost me £250 to insure it. Now my son is learning and I found what I thought would be ideal. A Peugeot 206 1.1LX on a '99 plate for €300. TPO insurance quote was the wrong side of €4500. TPF&T and comp quotes made my eyes water like I'd been kicked in the 'nads.

The 3-door Vauxhall Corsa Hatchback 1.0i 12V Expression (including the 'Ecoflex' model) is in Insurance Group 1, as is the 5-door Fiat Panda 1.1 Active (including the 'ECO' model) and the Citroën C1 1.0i Vibe (both 3-door & 5-door). For others in Group 1, see here:...

For a 17year old boy you will be very lucky to get insurance under £4000 for any car. Third party only is normally the most expensive insurance, contary to what you expect full comp is normally cheaper. You have to remember that 1 in 3 teenage drivers have an insurance claim in the first year.
The actual car makes little diffrence to the quoute ( as long as it is 1200cc or under) the high cost reflects the cost of potential injury claims in the event of a crash.

The Peugeot 206 in your post is in Group 7.
Remember that adding an older driver (with a good driving record) onto a young person's policy [as a 'named driver'] can cut the premium substantially (sometimes by as much as a third). It's irrelevant as to whether that named driver will ever actually drive the vehicle and, unlike 'fronting' (where a policy is taken out in the name of the older driver and the younger driver's name then added to the policy), it's completely legal.
Your pricing of the policy in Euros suggests that you're possibly in the Republic of Ireland, so some of this might not be relevant to you. However it's probably still worth reading:
