Is it reasonable for a dealer to sell a car with only one key - i.e. no spare ?

If so I would suggest that they wouldn't risk losing a sale for the sake of supplying a second key.
If you are buying from some oik in a second hand car lot then you run the risk of him turning up t your address and using the spare key he has retained to take the car back......
That's what they used to do.

Final few things
Are there companies ( apart from main dealers ) that provide this service and would you recomend going down that route - what are the pros and cons ?
In the service book i'm looking at it gives a ' vehicle key number ' - do you know what that is ?
I'm still not sure what methyl means by ' immergency key ' in his earlier post
