Is it reasonable for a dealer to sell a car with only one key - i.e. no spare ?

It's normal. I don't know about it being reasonable. As a rule, if you want another key, you have to order one and pay extra.
Yes. You need to go & get another one cut.
Yes - otherwise how would he be able to come round to your address and nick it without damaging it?
I must have been lucky then, I've always been given two sets of keys with my cars. Only one fob though.
Bazile, If the car has a Fob, one only, there are sites that you can get a second one without going to the dealer, look on the Web for a Car replacement dealer in your area, around £30>>£40
Yep, if that's all there is. OH is getting a spare cut at Timpsons. £40.

boxtops/twr- in your respective posts - Would that be a remote control or none remote control key.?

i'm looking at someone's handbook who has a Ford Focus .
It says that you can programme a maximum of eight keys to use with your vehicle and goes on to give instructions .

Does that mean that you buy a blank remote for the Focus and you can then programme it yourself ?
You can do the same for Audis too Bazile, I got my fob off Ebay, programmed the remote to my car and got the key profile cut. One for the wife and a spare. I think that will allow 8 as well.
Most unreasonable in my opinion.
And this.

So that's all a dealer is doing when you go to them - i.e. they get a blank fob and follow the instructions in the car handbook/tony's link ?
-- answer removed --
NEVER buy a modern car without the Vehicle Identity Card. It will cost you an arm and a leg and a kidney to get a replacement Remote Control Key.

Yep, isn't technology wonderful, all linked to the ECU.

For the purposes of clarification - in the case of the ford Focus - you simply get (from ebay or elsewhere) a blank fob and blank key, get the key profile cut on it and simply do as that fellow does in the videofor the Ford Focus ; to programme it and your new remote control is ready to use ?
No Bazile, the new key must have the transponder in it.
Keys? Must go lie down.
