the "smart" motorway is here, and here to stay. once the stretch between Birmingham and Stafford is completed, works will begin to convert the M6 between Stoke and Manchester. Additionally there are schemes in progress on the M1 round Sheffield and Leeds, and a further stretch is being prepared for conversion between Northampton and the M6. The M5 has been made ready for the gantries between Worcester and Birmingham, and there are more sections of the M4 and M5 to complete round Bristol.

I have developed this wonderful way of avoiding the problems of ''Smart Motorways''. stop using 'em, you'd be surprised how comforting it is to get back on the old main roads, whilst hordes of people are fighting traffic on motorways I'm cruising along mainly quiet class A roads ( slower but mainly interesting & truck free).
