Dune Buggies

When I was working in caerphilly yesterday, I saw a dune buggy being driven at high speed along the by-pass. There were two adults in the front, and a small boy, perhaps 5-6 years old in the rear ! I passed them further on, when they had pulled in and none of them were wearing seat belts.

The height of stupidity of course, to put the child's life at risk. If there had been an accident, the boy would have been thrown out of the vehicle.

I am not sure of the law here, although I would suspect that these kind of vehicles are included in seat belt law. I tried to get a number plate but I don't think the buggy had one.

We can go on about no helmet requirements for high powered trike riders as well. Did you not see any of those intermixed with your M4 convoy?

I have seen no end of those quad bikes being driven around on the roads ( usually at speed ) very rare to see the rider wearing a crash helmet ( I know that they don't have to legally ), those things are dangerous imo.

Those dune buggies are often based on the old VW beetle and if registered before the date when seatbelts where compulsory they don't legally have to have them. It should have the plate from the donor car on it but oddly enough that is only a minor offence in itself. Yes very silly though. I have a mate who's got a 1957 Cambridge with no belts and I must admit to feeling very vulnerable when I was in the front of it!

I hired and drove one in Lesvos. Lethal IMO.Very unstable surprisingly considering C of G and large tyres. Watching others darting around in dune buggys prompted me to buy one when I got back home. The reason I got the quad was because the wife fell off the motorcycle I had originally hired and broke her wrist. I hired the quad. The next day on way to the hospital on the other side of Lesvos the taxi driver told us that three holiday makers had died on quads the previous season.!!! Gulp.

I'm not surprised by that, retrocop. Two that come to mind with me are Ozzy Osbourne and Rik Mayall, neither of them killed by the quad bike accident but both very badly injured.

Your concern is obviously good, but if it fits in with the law regarding pre-67 chassis it is not illegal, just a 'bit' thoughtless or wreckless(hopefully but not an intended pun) of the parents.
