Plan / know an alternative route's should anything happen on the UK Motorways that "could" hold you up for hours?

Not really. If you're on a long journey, keeping all the possible alternatives in your head would be difficult. Unless it's a major holdup it's often quicker to sit it out.
i`d consider it - I know my way around Kent / Folkestone / Dover so we get to the family or ferry without significant delay
Nope, that's what map books are for. Obviously, if we know beforehand then we'll arrange the route accordingly.
Never, I like to think on my feet...it keeps me on my toes.
Yes, for my daily commute to and from work I can take the most direct route which involves a motorway, or take a slightly longer back-road.

Both before leaving in the morning and returning in the evening, I check the motorway traffic flow on-line. Even so, I have been caught out a few times by accidents which occurred after I had commenced my journey.
Yes I do. We live in the north west, in-laws in the cotswolds, so I have found a few alternative routes over the years for when the M6 is snarled up.
