Parking An Auto

When you leave an auto car for a period of time such as in work or over night, do you leave it in park (P) or neutral (N). If its park then when do you use neutral.

Sorry I didn't bother looking after the first two posts. My car is a VW Golf.
I tried putting it in neutral at the traffic lights but the auto hand brake disengaged and the car rolled forward.. I'll just leave it in drive at short stops in future and not bother with neutral.

Can you apply the handbrake when in drive?

I'm not familiar with an auto handbrake.

@Hopkirk...yes you can apply the handbrake when in drive,..that is what I was taught to do when at traffic lights etc.

@sigma...I wonder why you bother posting a question if you are only going to read the 1st two replies?
