Indicators
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that a vehicle's direction indicators were part of the MOT test. If I am correct, why is it that on my way to a Hospital today, I saw several motorists whose indicators were not working, even when making a left or right turn.

Why is it that a lot of drivers won't use one finger to use an indicator - yet will freely use two fingers when making a point to a fellow motorist!

An MOT is only any good at the time of the test. Faults can occur when you drive away from the test centre. However, everyone should do a check of oil, lights etc prior to making any journey but we all know that doesn't happen. In addition to faults not all drivers know when to indicate or are just lazy!!
No comment except that older members will remember being taught,in order to pass their civilian tests, several disciplines.
A. Emergency Stop,
B. Hill Start
C. 3 point turn
D. Reversing around a corner keeping close and parallel with the kerb
E.Reversing into a parking space.
Some or none of these are included in the Driving Test nowadays. Small wonder the Insurance premiums are rising.
Some would say us older gentle folk are unfit to drive. ???

Thing is. If a fuse blew and your indicators failed most drivers wouldn't know how to indicate turning left, slowing down, turning right, going straight ahead using hand signals. Those who remember hand signals would not be understood by those they were directed at. The only driving hand signals that I notice used by the younger drivers are two fingers which are not in the Highway code or Roadcraft. :-)

It depends on the examiner apparently if one, some, none or all are required to be demonstrated.
2 weeks before my youngest was due to take his test (28yrs) I went out with him on a check test.
His BSM Instructor had never taught him any of those disciplines and didn't advise him to purchase and read the Highway Code.
He was told the sample driving test computer question leaflet would suffice. !!!

Indicators are available for 'retrofit' and are particularly recommended for BMW, Mercedes,Porsche and similar cars.

On a driving test the examiner will ask the learner to perform two of the following:
Reversing around a corner into a side road on the left
Turning in the road (typically a '3-point turn')
Reversing into a parking bay
Reverse parallel parking
That is in addition to the emergency stop and hill start.
