Do you mean get rid of vehicle excise duty?
I agree in principle since the administartion costs and evasion levels must be high for VED, but I think the main reasons it won't happen are:
- governments prefer to have a lot of smaller taxes rather than a few big ones;
- the transitional arrangements would be messy - fuel costs would go up immediately but drivers wouldn't save on VED until their renewal date (unless everyone gets a refund at the same time);
-some vehicles and people don't have to pay Ved but would be hit by the increased fuel cost
- it would immediately push up inflation
But overall I think it's something a brave government should tackle
Tax doesn't remove the issue, it just grabs wealth from citizens, because they can.
The cars are still in existence and being produced for sell. The fuel is no less clean.
Thing to do is leave the end user alone and stop bullying them. Phase out vehicles that are unapproved of over time. Put the money into research for an alternative fuel (that doesn't further overload our electricity supply !!!). Tackle the real problem rather than be seen to bashing the decent citizen again.
is the vw episode not showing that the emission test can be fiddled by lowering the load on the engine for the test for example is it tested with the air-con off or on, or possibly with the alternator not charging also was it in the budget that all cars will pay some tax in the future
