My left arm on top of it being "sick" is sick to death of lifting and lifting and putting down the brake. Instead of going for a run of a long kind - you are being stopped every few minutes with water works, phoenix gas, crossings (necessarily of course), pedestrians taking chances with you, new pipes being put in.

I started a journey to CU on Monday at 6.24pm which should take about 5-10 minutes - I didn't get in until 7.10pm - I am never late for CU and it is all to do with these roadworks. Fed up with them. Oh forgot "diversions".

Why does driving an automatic excuse you of the need to apply a handbrake?
Note this, the second half of Highway Code rule 114:

In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.
Because even in drive with no brake applied it tends not to move forward if your foot's off the accelerator. JJs situation would just need a move of the foot to the brake at most.
Prudie, it would be much safer if you did apply the handbrake when stopped.
It doesn't take much of a drop in concentration for you to move forward unintentionally. Most autos do move when in drive and the brake is released, without the accelerator being pressed.

As the Highway Code says, at night it is annoying sitting behind someone with their brake lights on unnecessarily.
As a few other people have suggested, get an automatic...much more suitable for congested stop/start roads and can almost put a bit of enjoyment back into driving in such conditions.
Jenny has said she won't be getting a new car.
I can recommend Gypsy - I saw it premiered at Chichester, Imelda was wonderful.
