because Wiltshire disbanded their safety camera partnership some years ago.

.....they disbanded their own....so why does that mean everyone else must give up on the issue?
Not too bright stay-at-home dad faffs about all day doing nothing of consequence.
Police say "He's actually harmless but we wish he'd take more care on the stepladder"
Wiltshire apparently has the highest incidence of people passing mirrored biscuit tins and thinking they've been caught speeding.
Their ham is excellent though, slow cured we believe.

that's funny, I'm normally the one getting into trouble for not taking speeding seriously!
If they want to take matters into their own hands they should make a collection for a bypass road around their village. That'd be ideal. Major roads are unsuitable for villages.

Meanwhile I don't suppose these vigilante types will take the blame when their fake camera causes rapid breaking and an accident. No I thought not. Their holier than all, and it's all those nasty drivers' fault even though without their fake camera there'd have been no accident.

That they are holier than all ? Yes I think so too. But the rest is impeccable and beyond reasonable dispute.
"Meanwhile I don't suppose these vigilante types will take the blame when their fake camera causes rapid breaking and an accident."

And that is beyond reasonable dispute?

So you have a speeding driver who spots something that looks like a speed camera. He brakes fiercely and loses control (or another speeding driver behind runs into the back of him). And it's not his/their fault?

I'd hate to have to argue a matter that was open to reasonable dispute, OG :-)

BTW, this story was more than a year old when the BBC article was posted, and that was last August. Must be a slow news day!!!
This story was shown in the 'speeding' documentary last night. The fake camera slowed the traffic when all else failed. Residents had asked for traffic calming measures etc but the council refused. IMO the camera is a good idea though now it's been highlighted I guess the public won't be duped anymore and will return to speeding through the village. Just shows that a real camera catching the speeders would work AND generate money coming in....
I am really surprised at your comments OG, the guy in question is trying to stop people breaking the law when obviously his local council are doing nothing. I live in a small village & it is shocking to see the amount of speeding motorists in a 30 mph who have no regard for the law at all ( including speeding whilst using a mobile phone ) I say good luck to him for tackling the issue I hope there will be more like him now that our stupid government have cut council funds to the bone.
Fault can be shared. Given that the scare tactic of those taking matters into their own hands was the difference between an accident or not, then of course the main fault would be with the perpetrator. Trying something dangerous and washing one's hands of the consequences is not a responsible way to solve an issue.
OG, what about an accident on same road BECAUSE of speeding, that can happen easily, it's not just going to be the issue of the fake camera but the driver of the car. Let's face it, if anyone brakes because they see a speed camera, they are going too fast anyway, so who is at fault, the camera (fake or not) or the speeding motorist?

Just had a look at the link, in the photo' of the guy standing in front on the fake camera, it appears to be overhanging the road a bit, surely that's dangerous? and it's attached to a Utility Company's pole, is that allowed?
Why not just set up a community speedwatch and stay within the law. It will have the same effect.

ubasses I think they did in the village and they received an awful lot of abuse from the speeding motorists, just a shame people are so selfish and don't care about others. With the community watch, if I recall, the motorists only receive a warning from the police, not a deterrent in my book imo. Makes you wonder if the perpetrators would like motorists speeding in their neck of the woods!
If a driver fiercely slows down from speeding to the correct speed and that manoeuvre causes him to have an accident, then that is entirely his own fault.

I have not heard of many accidents cause by cameras (real or fake) caused by slowing down too quickly. Most drivers should be able to safely reduce their speed from 50 to 30 without smashing through the windscreen.
That is a shame dunnitall, I hope that abuse is not too common as our village is in the process of setting one up. The Police are meant to send out two letters and if reported for a third time they will get a visit and warned that they will be targeted (whatever that means).
Did have a look at it but with all the training needed, decided that I am doing enough volunteering in the village.
At the moment the locals out driving are flashing their lights at speeding drivers making them think there is a speed trap ahead. Makes them slow down.
