VW Golf in safe mode

I have a VW Golf and the stereo is stuck in safe mode. I have a 4 digit code which should allow me to unlock the sterio, however I need to first get it out of safe mode so that I can enter the code. has any one got any idea about how I can do this??

Park somewhere secure and safe, leave ignition and radio on, it could take a few minutes or up to 30 min for the code to be put in, (the - - - - will start flashing)
