Burnt Out Clutch

I had my Toyota Yaris in for a full service in December but, in January, it alarmingly went up in smoke. They tell me in the garage that a clutch can go at "any time" but should signs of wear on it not been spotted during its service? I only have 73,500 km on the clock.
Opinions please, and thanks in advance.

If the car was driving normally - and you didn't mention you thought that the clutch was troublesome - I don't think that a scheduled service would flag up a clutch that was not at it's best.
And 46000 miles isn't bad going for a clutch....although much depends on the driver!

Clutches can go suddenly 73,500 Km is good going for a clutch to last.
I have had a clutch fail with no warning at at all.
