Using Satnavs "on The Go"

I am a bit unsure about the legal situation here.

If I am using my SatNav, in a windscreen holder, can I input new info, cancel, etc, etc, when I am actually driving, or would I need to pull in, switch the engine off and do it ?

Forget the legal situation. Do you consider yourself fully in control and giving your full concentration to your driving awareness whilst faffing about with a Sat/Nav whilst actually mobile?
I would of thought common sense dictates that you are just as potentially lethal as if you were texting on a cell phone.

you can use them whilst driving, but if the police think you are distracted, or not in control of your vehicle, you could find yourself being stopped and penalised. If using a navigation device was deemed to result in you driving without due care and attention, you may find yourself not only falling foul of the law but also facing significant increases in your insurance premiums

Having been in a car when the driver is faffing about with the Sat Nav, I can say categorically that it is not safe to do so.

If it's not illegal, it should be,

I have decided not to press anything on my sat nav while driving as I assumed that it would be regarded as coming under the same category as using a mobile phone- even just clicking one answer button on the mobile would be a breach of the law

As Baldric says BUT I read somewhere the other day that if you are using your smartphone as a satnav simply touching it could count as an offence.

Although its not illegal if I was attending to the radio, other then what has been mentioned above about being in control of the car.

Yes, I found that even trying to plug my sat nav charger lead into my sat nav when my sat nav battery goes flat caused me to lose control a bit, and typing in an address was definitely not safe for me

If you are attending to a car audio system whilst driving and have a collision you will be driving WDC or worse ,Dangerous driving or maybe Death by dangerous driving.

On a related subject.....I was listening to "Broadcasting House" this morning, and Paddy was present when two people were apprehended for using Mobile phones.

In this day and age, there are plenty of devices that you can buy that will allow you to use a Mobile hands-free without breaking the law. I have a small, not very high-end Fiesta and it comes complete with bluetooth hands-free.

So why are people still running the very real risk of losing their licence, with this new law that has come in ?

I would not adjust my satnav while driving, I don't feel safe doing it.

You can always pull over and stop to adjust settings.

I have been trying to find the link and haven't been successful but I did read a few days ago that it is illegal to operate your sat nav by touch when you are driving. Some satnavs can be operated by voice.

This stuff seems to be deliberately vague, around a subjective opinion as to whether you remain in control of the vehicle. It means you can believe you are ok and the cops decide otherwise.
