I recently bought an old escort (M) and only got one key with it. I went to try and get a spare cut and was told it would cost me 50.00 as I didn't have the 'red key'. Can't I get a spare cut from the key I'm using ?

You can get a key cut anywhere, and it would open the doorlocks, but if your key has a red chip in the end, you'll need to get one made and programmed at your local Ford dealer, as the car won't start without it.
Totally agree with rojam.
A good auto locksmith will be able to programme one in, phone around for prices.
Being charged 50.00 as you dont have a red key is not as bad as it sounds.
I work in the trade and there are many cars that are more expensive if you lose the main key.
As said earlier a car lock specialist would be able to help, but if the price is not significantly cheaper I would go for the Ford option for peace of mind. I have had some third party keys go wrong after a while and refuse to start the car.
You need the red key to be able to programme the black key.

had to change locks on my doors got a complete set for 10 on ebay (x2 door locks plus boot and ignition locks plus x2 keys) reasonably easy to change if you keep your red key on your keyring with the new keys it should work fine as the red imobiliser part will still be detected. any new keys cut will work on door locks and boot but you will need red key for ignition.
