I assume none of you are haulage contractors..I am, so let me clear some points up. Whilst AdBlue is an extra cost, it is not too exorbitant. I use about 20litres a week in my truck at a cost of 42p/l, so about £8/week. If you see AdBlue for sale in garages etc, its aimed at car drivers...thats why its often over £1/l. It is not the direct cost of AdBlue which is the problem; its when it goes wrong. When I got my truck brand new out of the factory, the AdBlue system wasn't working. At first they thought it needed a new pump...£3,500!, but it wasn't that. It was the ECU that works the pump...only £1,800. That is the problem, not the actual cost of the stuff, but the cost of fixing it. I have 2 NOx sensors on the exhaust. Both have failed and both have had to be replaced at £350 a time. Nothing wrong with the system, just the sensors. There is so much 'technology' in vehicles now and more and more there are no real mechanics anymore, just parts changers and that is why the costs are so high and thats why people fit emulators...to try and keep costs down in what is already a tough occupation. Personally I wouldn't do it, but I know people who have.
Our local bus company experimented with hybrid vehicles around 2011. We had them on our route and they proved successful so they extended their usage to their flagship route, about 30 buses in all. Now, as the batteries are starting to fail and the cost of replacement rears its ugly head, they are replacing the engines with conventional diesels and all new buses they buy are fitted with gas-burners.
