thanks for all your advice. It has had a second opinion unfortunately. The problem is that if they take it apart to see if it's mechanical or electrical and its mechanical, i'll then have to wait for a new gearbox to come from Germany, with no working car for weeks. If it's a sensor type thing, the thought is it's probably melted and somehow it's difficult to change the sensor without dropping out the engine; work that'll be expensive in itself. No guaruntee something else won't go wrong shortly after either i suppose.
