In my 56 years of car ownership I've never had my car key unable to turn on the ignition due to the heat admittedly it had been in the sun all day ( can't park it anywhere else)I knew it couldnt be anything more even in1976 I didn't experienced this.so a day without my car. It was ok the next morning.now I've started on very hot days to put baking foil over the ignition / steering lock.
Anyone else had this ?
When you say "stuck", do you mean that the engine will not fire, the engine will not turn over, or no ignition whatsoever(ie no wipers, indicators, etc) or that the key will not physically turn in the ignition barrel. Can't say that I have ever had such but am aware that non fuel injected systems can sometimes struggle when the fuel in the pumped system has evaporated causing air locks and such.
Was it definately your car? When I was young and had an Austin Mini. I remember getting into "my" car with the key. But for some reason the ignition key would not turn. It was only when I noticed how tidy the car was I then realised that it was not my car.
Sounds like the ignition barrel is either worn and when it expands in the heat a burr is not letting it turn, or if it is a new motor the barrel is still so closely matched to the case that expansion is jamming it. A bag of frozen peas may have worked or else you would have had to, ironically, hot wired it. :))
That's not very nice Derek at 22.14 when people are trying to help, I've been driving as long, but I had the same problem, and then realised, how silly of me, ( I FORGOT THE STEERING LOCK ) all fine.
