I was convinced it was the exhaust pipe banging the bodywork due to a broken exhaust-suspension rubber - wrong. I then found that when the towbar was fitted 6 years before they had made a mistake putting the bumper back on - wrong again. I happened to mention it when I had the car serviced - the service manager passes my door on his way to work, so he collects and delivers it for me, so he said he would listen for the noise. It turned out it was the FRONT shock absorber bearings which had worn. The message is that sounds travel around the body and can appear to come from somewhere completely unexpected.
When I had a clunking sound from the rear of my car it was because the exhaust pipe wasn't properly secured. The mechanic at my local garage removed a rubber thingy (technical term!) and said "You need a new one of these". He also told me where to go to buy one. I was expecting to pay twenty or thirty quid for it but it turned out to cost just £2.70. I took it back to the garage, where the owner fitted it free of charge for me. I wish that all car repairs only cost £2.70 ;-)
